Spring Break - Surf Camp Activities (PICTURES WILL BE POSTED LATER)

As a part of my April Spring Break, I went to spend a week at the Natural Surf Lodge near Hossegor. As its name implies, the lodge was created to teach surfing and its ecological lifestyle to those who spend their vacations there. During my time there, I managed to do a series of different Action + Creativity activities :

Activity: Surfing Lessons
Type: Action
Time Spent: 18 hours
Supervisor: Mr.Mouscardes

As it was a surf camp, the majority of our time was spent having surfing lessons. There were two groups,  the beginners (of which i was) who stayed on the smaller waves and focused on finding balance whilst turning and the more advanced group (with external local students as well) who would go further into the ocean. Although it was a very different experience from the individual surf lessons I had this summer in Itacare, Brazil (see anterior posts), I really enjoyed it and felt that my surfing skills have largely improved.

Activity: Stand Up Paddling / Kayaking
Type: Action
Time Spent : 3 hours
Supervisor: Mr. Mouscardes

Activity : Music Sessions at Lodge (guitar/ukelele/voice)
Type: Creativity
Time Spent: 5 hours
Supervisor: Mr. Mouscardes

I definitely recommend the Natural Surf Lodge for those considering trying surfing, the nature is beautiful and the atmosphere is incredibly friendly. For more information on the lodge, visit their website  : http://www.naturalsurflodge.com/index.php?chlangue=FR

Helping out at the Boskafe

Activity: Helping at the Boskafe
Type: Service
Hours: 15
Supervisor: Laurent Moisan

I've previously mentioned the Boskafe in this blog as a part of my CAS activities for Creativity, but I have also been doing activities that concern Service. As Laurent, the owner of the Boskafe and a friend of mine, works alone at the Boskafe from 10am to 8pm, he can often get very tired from taking care of this little french coffeeshop. This is where I come in hand ! A few hours every week, I have been helping Laurent around with little tasks around the cafe such as doing the dishes or getting groceries. These little services can often be a big relief for Laurent, who can focus on the more essential aspects of his day to day work.

To discover the Boskafe's website, visit Laurent's blog : boskafe.blogspot.com

Guitar Lessons for Abigail

Activity : Guitar Lessons
Type: Service
Hours: 10
Supervisor: Henriette (Abigail's mother)

Abigail is my 11 year old next door neighboor and as the curious young lady she is, she had been wanting to learn how to play guitar. As a favor to Abigail, I have been giving her guitar lessons once a month for about 2 hours teaching her the few basic chords I can play. It's a fun activity to do as Abigail is a quick learner and loves to discover new styles in music. It's been a great experience teaching her the little I know how to do on a guitar and she is improving very quickly !

BosKafe is a little cafe in the 15th arrondissement that offers its clients fresh products and interesting combinations in the sandwiches/salads/pasta, good music, and always a good mood from the owner Laurent. Laurent has accepted to teach me some of recipes that he uses in the cafe as a help for my CAS hours. Up to now I have learned how to make a homemade apple crumble, and these lessons are planned to continue a few hours afterschool during the next few weeks.

UPDATE!

Activity: Cooking Lesson

Supervisor : Laurent
Time Spent: 4 hours

I have now learned a new recipe after practicing the apple crumble that Laurent taught me how to cook a few times. The recipe I learned today was a "gateau breton"!

Service Activity - Helping at the Soup Kitchen

Activity: Organizing/Helping the Soup Kitchen
Type: Service
Supervisor: Mr.Chedburn
Time Spent: 3 hours

For the end of our M.Y.P program, fellow student Camille Chedburn and I went to lend a hand to the organized Soup Kitchen in Paris a school service activity organized by teacher Mr. Chedburn and adored the experience! As the program joining ISP to the Armee du Salut organization (who organized daily Soup Kitchen and other service activities in France), Camille and I decided to take things in our own hands and give ourselves and other Grade 11 students the possibility to take part in this activity as well. We therefor took the time, with the help of Mr.Chedburn, to contact the association and organize weekly groups of students to help from 6.00 to 8.00 at the Soup Kitchen organized in Stalingrad.

Personally, I attended the Soup Kitchen for the first time this year last night along with some fellow students (organized seperately from the school trips planned weekly on Wednesday nights) and remembered what a great feeling it is to help out those in need, and especially how easy it can be to help a few Parisian S.D.Fs (Sans Domicile Fixe meaning homeless) get through another cold night by serving them coffee or tea ! Definetly an experience i enjoyed participating in again and hopefully not for the last time of the year, as I am already planning new trips to help!

ESS - Event Organizing: Halloween Dance

Activity: Halloween Dance Event Organizing
Type: Action/Service
Supervisor: Mr.Francis
Time Spent: 5 hours

At the beginning of the semester, a group of E.S.S (Environmental Systems and Societies) students - including myself - decided to try to organize by ourselves, with the help of our teacher Mr. Francis, a Conservational Trip in a foreign country. Originally, we have been looking at trying to go to Costa Rica on an Earthwatch program and try to help to save turtles in danger of extinction by aiding scientists and researchers currently working on this themselves. In order fund this trip, we have been working together as a class/group to fundraise the money to go on the trip. We all met up at the beginning of the year to delegate each section of the fundraising students would be responsible for. I chose to take on the task of Event Organizer, as it an aspect of fundraising I felt I could be quite good at it. The first event that we decided to organize was a Grade 6 - 10 dance that took place in the school's Drama Room. As the dance took place in mid-October, we chose to create the dance around the theme of Halloween - which meant that kids had to dress up (entrance cost more expensive if wearing normal clothes). Although there were chaotic and complicated moments where the whole ESS Trip Team feared that we wouldn't have everything ready on time, the dance was very successful and personally I believe that the Grades 6 - 10 had fun dressing up and dancing for Halloween and to help us save the turtles. On that evening, the ESS Trip Team raised approximately 610 euros, which is already a big step closer towards going to Costa Rica to save the turtles !

Summer CAS Activity - Ecological Walk/Visit of Baia Formosa

Activity: Ecological Walk/Visit of the town Baia Formosa
Type: Action
Time Spent: 3 hours

During my one week stay in beautiful Baia Formosa, a small isolated fisherman's village south of Natal, in the region of Rio Grande do Norte of Brazil, I decided to take advantage of the village's strong and beautiful natural surroundings. As it was my first time in Baia Formosa, I decided to explore it to the maximum. The visit of Baia Formosa began with a boogie ride in the famous sugar cane fields of Baia Formosa, which also passed through many pineapple fields. After getting to taste not only fresh pineapple but also sugar cane, the visit continued with a boat ride through the Lagoa (lake) de Araraquara, which I greatly enjoyed, even though there was rain. The second part of my ecological visit of Baia Formosa involved an ecological walk guided by Jose Maria, a local tour guide and friend. The ecological walk was through the forest of the Gameleira and the importance of the "trilha" (meaning walk in portuguese) was mainly focused on maintaining the beautiful forest healthy, which therefore meant it was an environmental-friendly and conservational experience. I really enjoyed to learn more on the stories and natural beauties of Baia Formosa, Rio Grande do Norte as it was nice be in such close contact with the nature surrounding us. Also, I got to see one of my favorite animals during the Trilha da Gameleira, a young baby monkey (see pictures above) !
