ESS - Event Organizing: Halloween Dance

Activity: Halloween Dance Event Organizing
Type: Action/Service
Supervisor: Mr.Francis
Time Spent: 5 hours

At the beginning of the semester, a group of E.S.S (Environmental Systems and Societies) students - including myself - decided to try to organize by ourselves, with the help of our teacher Mr. Francis, a Conservational Trip in a foreign country. Originally, we have been looking at trying to go to Costa Rica on an Earthwatch program and try to help to save turtles in danger of extinction by aiding scientists and researchers currently working on this themselves. In order fund this trip, we have been working together as a class/group to fundraise the money to go on the trip. We all met up at the beginning of the year to delegate each section of the fundraising students would be responsible for. I chose to take on the task of Event Organizer, as it an aspect of fundraising I felt I could be quite good at it. The first event that we decided to organize was a Grade 6 - 10 dance that took place in the school's Drama Room. As the dance took place in mid-October, we chose to create the dance around the theme of Halloween - which meant that kids had to dress up (entrance cost more expensive if wearing normal clothes). Although there were chaotic and complicated moments where the whole ESS Trip Team feared that we wouldn't have everything ready on time, the dance was very successful and personally I believe that the Grades 6 - 10 had fun dressing up and dancing for Halloween and to help us save the turtles. On that evening, the ESS Trip Team raised approximately 610 euros, which is already a big step closer towards going to Costa Rica to save the turtles !
